Leonard Michael Nuessen, 83, formerly resident of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, June 5th, 2013, peacefully, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, Kansas. Leonard was born in Olpe, Kansas on October 11, 1929, to Agnes Marie "Maggie" (Miller) and Henry Bernard Nuessen. Living in Olpe, he attended Catholic school and worked on his parents' farm. In 1950s he served in the US Army during the Korean War as a SP3.
Moving to Wichita, he became a "sealer" and a machinist for Boeing Aircraft until he retired.
Leonard was united in marriage to Leona Irene Perry on August 5, 1961 in Miami, Oklahoma.
Leonard was a fisherman, gardener, great cook, and a player of various card games. Although not a talkative man, he had some wonderful stories to share with his family. He and his wife, Leona, traveled to as many places as they could mostly in their own personal RV.
Preceded in death was his wife, Leona, brothers, Eugene, Clarence Nuessen; sisters, Leona Bauer, Irene McClure, and Lenore Rice; grandson, Curtis Nuessen; a great-grandson, Blake Thompson.
He is survived by two sons, Harold H. Nuessen and wife Carole of Gatesville, TX, O. Leon Nuessen and wife Carolyn of Gravette, AR; one daughter, Judy Macy and husband Mike of McPherson, Kansas.
Three sisters: Firmina Liggett, of Wichita, Bernadine Kerhes, of Olpe and Mary Ann Coffman, of Emporia, Kansas. Special sister/niece: Bobbie Clum and husband Larry of Maize, KS. Two sister-in-laws: Sharon Perry of Austin, TX and Virginia Nuessen of Wichita, KS. Two brother-in-laws: Floyd Perry of Wichita KS and Wayne Perry of Franklin, TX.
17 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Visitation was on Thursday June 6, 2013 with the family present at Glidden-Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, June 7, 2013 at All Saints Catholic Church, Wichita, Kansas, with Fr. H. Setter officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to National Kidney Foundation or to Hospice of Reno County and they can be sent in care of the Glidden - Ediger Funeral Home; 222 West Euclid Street; McPherson, Kansas.
