During the Civil War, Daniel served as a private in Company E, 2nd Vermont Regiment, United States Sharpshooters. He mustered in November 9, 1861, and was discharged due to disability on November 21, 1862. During his service, the Regiment took part in the battles of Bull Run, South Mountain, Falmouth, and Fredricksburg. He becamae a member of the U.S Grant. post, Grand Army of the Republic.

Daniel married Velona Thatcher on May 21 1878 in Rochester, Vermont.

On September 19,1899 Daniel married Rosina A. Rand Spaulding. Rosina recieved a pension for his service.

An obituary and burial notice were published in the Herald and News (West Randolph, Vermont) July 30, 1903.
