He was born December 9, 1948, in Mason City, Iowa to Dean and Aritta Abbott. He graduated from high school in Escanaba, Michigan and then graduated from Northern Michigan University. In 1975, he graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Law and initially practiced in Sioux City, Iowa.
On August 9, 1975, he married Caryl Hebbert at Scotland, South Dakota. John and Caryl moved to Brandon, South Dakota in January of 1976. John opened a law office in Brandon and with his wife practiced law there for 31 years. For many years he also taught legal and business related courses on law and business at both the University of Sioux Falls and Kilian Community College. John was a voracious reader, loved history and sports, travel, his quiet backyard view of Splitrock Creek, and being with his family.
John is survived by his wife, Caryl, and his children, Daniel, Patrick and Ashley, all of Brandon; his brothers, Richard (Jean) Abbott, Harry (Genevieve) Abbott and William Abbott; his aunt, Anne Murphey; his mother-in-law, Elsie Hebbert; sister-in-law, Donna (Cal) Neumeister; brother-in-law, Rod Hebbert; and many other friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Christopher; and father-in-law, Archie Hebbert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Friday, March 2, 2007, at Risen Savior Catholic Church, Brandon, South Dakota with Father Jerry Kopel officiating.
