HELEN AYCRIGG SCHELLMAN died peacefully, surrounded by family on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at Sunrise of Marietta. Helen was born in Yuba City, California, on December 14, 1923, to Benjamin Mesnard and Helen Findlay Aycrigg. Her father served with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Chinese theater during WW I. He remained in Manchuria post war, working on the transcontinental rail system across China. Upon returning to the U.S., he made the agricultural area of northern California his home. He married Helen Findlay of Madison, Wisconsin, and together they established their beloved ranch in Marysville and started their family. Helen Findlay was an extraordinary woman in her own right, achieving an architectural degree despite the challenge of deafness. She went on to be a pioneering woman architect in the state of California prior to her marriage. Young Helen completed her high school years at Hamlin School for Girls in San Francisco and entered Stanford University in Palo Alto in 1941. As WW II escalated, and with cadres of soldiers in training throughout the state, Helen met an earnest, handsome West Point graduate from Dayton, Ohio. She and Robert H. Schellman were married on November 15, 1943, and spent the next thirty years in various duty stations around the world. These included two in Germany, as part of the post-WW II occupation and then in the 1960s; two tours in Hawaii, and a year of separation as Bob served as U.S. Military Advisor to the Republic of Korea. Helen and Bob were both very active in their Catholic Community wherever they lived. They retired from military life to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1971, where Helen remained busy with her large family and many friends.Helen had an insatiable curiosity and zest for life, delighting in introducing her many grandchildren to the world of the arts. She was an active supporter of the Atlanta Symphony, Opera Guild, and Atlanta Ballet.She was a season ticket holder to many regional theaters; held memberships in the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Fernbank, the Atlanta Aquarium, and the Atlanta Zoo. Most of all, Helen was steadfast and true, gracious and kind. Her loyalty was legend and she was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Helen is survived by her eight children and their families: Helen Lobley of Brisbane, Australia; Pamela (David) of Mansfield, Ohio; Robert (Aditi) of Mumbai,India and Arlington, Virginia; James (Andrea) of Lafayette, Louisiana; Deborah Seymour of Winchester, Massachusetts; John (Jenifer) of Atlanta, Georgia; William (Deborah) of Marietta, Georgia; Richard (Kathe) of Marietta, Georgia. Surviving also are 28 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Major General Robert H. Schellman; her beloved brothers John and Peter Aycrigg and their spouses Marilyn and Lennie; cherished brother-in-law and sister-inlaw, Col. Paul and Martha Jeanne Ramee; and infant grandson Mason Richard Schellman. The family is especially grateful to the loving team of caregivers who, in her final years, looked after Helen as their own: Susan Short, Pauline Francis, Retha Stanford, Kim Bouie, Angela Woodward,and Sheila Bedford. Helen supported a number of charities. In lieu of flowers, the family invites her friends to remember her by donating to their favorite charity. Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 10th from 6-9 p.m. at Patterson Funeral Home, 1157 Old Canton Road, Marietta, with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Helens life in Christ will be celebrated at noon Mass on Saturday, November 11th at Holy Family Church, 3401 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mount Vernon Highway, NW, Sandy Springs. After the burial, there will be a reception at Holy Family Church.
