Clarence L. 'Nick' Backus

Perry--Clarence L. 'Nick' Backus, 76, Perry died Thursday, Jan. 3, at a Topeka hospital.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said Mr. Backus was injured at the scene of a train-pickup accident Thursday in Grantville. He died shortly after arrival at the Topeka hospital from internal bleeding, a Shawnee County Coroner official said.

Mr. Backus worked for Henry Manufacturing from 1956 until he retired in 1971.

He was born April 5, 1906, at Hoyt, the son of Ed and Lily McMillan Backus. He lived in the Grantville and Perry communities most of his life.

He was married to Viola E. Whitehead Dec. 1, 1928, in Topeka. She died Aug. 20, 1980. A daughter Gayle Iva Dale Backus, died in 1945.

Survivors include three daughters, a brother, 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Grantville Cemetery.
