He was a successful merchant and member of the Virginia Legislature 1889-1890. He was married twice, first to Virginia Hare on 8/21/1866. After her death, he married Mrs. Fanny Bruce on 6/17/1909. He had no children of his own. He and his first wife reared Ward Songer and Carrie Fizer, who were later married.

John Burton, Private. He was born September 4, 1844 in Giles County, Virginia. He enlisted in the 47th VA Cavalry, Co B for three months. The 47th VA Cavalry then merged into the 26th VA Cavalry. On October 4, 1864, he was severely wounded WIA and disabled by a gunshot wound through the body and lungs near Ft. Harrison, seven miles below Richmond, Virginia.


His parents were James William Burton and Elizabeth V. Pruett of Wolf Creek, Giles County, Virginia. John's siblings were: Martha, Elias born about 1828 (60th VA Inf, Co H), Lewis born about 1829 (51st VA Infantry), Isabel "Lydia" born about 1832, May "Mary" born February 21, 1834, Pendleton born February 1, 1836 (8th VA Cavalry, Co F), Persatin born about 1837, Travis born February 9, 1838 (7th VA Infantry, Co D), Sarah born April 2, 1840 and Judah "Judith" April 26, 1842. John married Victoria E. Hare on August 23, 1866, who was born on March 30, 1848 in Mechanicsburg, Virginia. John was a hotel keeper, merchant and farmer in Mechanicsburg, Virginia. He is listed in the1870 Rocky Gap Township, Bland County, Virginia census, no children. He is listed in the 1880 Rocky Gap Township, Bland County, Virginia census, no children, with George Ward, age 15, clerk in store and Hester Blankenship (F), cousin, housekeeper and John Hare age 6. He was also a Postmaster in Rocky Gap, Virginia for seven years.
