Fred Johnston, a man who enjoyed helping others, passed away at Menno Haven Nursing Home on July 7, 2001. He was born in Waynesboro on April 23, 1915 to the late Grover and Bertha Myers Johnston.

A 1935 graduate of Waynesboro High School, Fred excelled on the football field as a quarterback. He was known as the "golden tornado."

On Nov. 14, 1936, he married Mary Jane Nitterhouse of Chambersburg. Fred worked at the Landis Tool Company in Waynesboro and Mary Jane worked at the Stanley Company in Chambersburg, saving money to buy a house and begin a family.

Starting a family was put off while Fred served with the U.S. Marines during WW II. He attained the rank of Corporal and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.

After the war, Fred began working for Nitterhouse Concrete, the company founded by his father-in-law. Fred worked for the company until retiring in 1977. He and Many Jane also started their family after the war. They raised 2 children in their Blanchard Ave. home, daughter Sharan and son Frederick D. (Dan), Jr.

Fred was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW and the BPOElks 600. He was elected "Elk of the Year" numerous times.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters and a brother. Surviving him were this daughter Sharan and her husband Leonard Carbaugh; son Dan and his wife Marcia (Baumunk); grandchildren Lynette, Joshua and Philip; sister Wilma Stephey and numerous nieces and nephews.
