She and Bill raised 5 sons and two daughters. Bill was initially a tenant farmer who frequently moved the family, often due to Bessie's superstitions. Bill later left farming and became a well respected and sought after carpenter. The couple eventually moved into a home on the corner of Catherine and Third Streets in Chambersburg. Her sister Clara, whom the family called Aunt Annie, moved in with them in 1947.
Bessie spent the last ten years of her life as a bed patient at home. Her upstairs bedroom would become very hot in the summer. Even an open window did not alleviate the heat. Her sons would get her up and, with her between them, would try to help her to walk. She would drag her feet, but it was so uncomfortable for her. The boys eventually gave up the effort. Clara would sit by Bessie's bed and keep her informed of the daily activities, etc. Bessie's children, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law were all a huge help in caring for her. Neighbors were as well.
She passed away at the Chambersburg Hospital. Her children, 10 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and sister Clara survived her.
