Garnet was active in the King Street United Brethren Church where he taught Sunday School and was president of the Men's Brotherhood of Missions. He was also an administrator of the church's board. Garnet was the first recipient of the Pennsylvania Men's Brotherhood "Layman of the Year" award, given by the United Brethren Mission Board of Pennsylvania. He was also a long time member of the Gideon Society.
In addition to church related activities, he was a member of AARP, serving as the local chapter's president.
He was survived by his wife, his daughter and 2 grandsons.
