Gilbert P Nichols, 60, of 22889 CR 36, Goshen, Ind, died at 12:25 pm Saturday, June 18, 2005, at his home following an extended battle with complications from brain cancer and several strokes. Mr Nichols was born on July 19, 1944, at Spartansburg, to Robert and Florence (Newton) Nichols. He was a 1962 graduate of Sparta High School where he was an accomplished varsity athlete, and also a 1966 graduate of Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill. He served with the juvenile justice system in Chicago, Meadville and Indianapolis. Mr Nichols was a member of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency. In the early 1970s, Mr Nichols accepted a position with the Indianapolis Youth for Christ and served on Mayor Richard Lugar's Task Force for Community Development. In 1970 Mr Nichols moved to Elkhart where he took a position as the Youth for Christ executive director in which he was responsible for purchasing and restoring the Goshen Post Office for Christian youth ministry. In 1984 Mr Nichols was honored as the Youth for Christ "National Director of the Year" and in 1989 he led the audio department at Crown International, Elkhart. He was also a member of Goshen Rotary and Citizens Concerned for Community Values. Mr Nichols was married on June 11, 1966 to the former Kathleen Kesler, who survives. Mr Nichols is survived by a son, Aaron Nichols of Elkhart; a sister, Ruth (John) Shenk of Lebanon, PA; and a brother, Lee (Monica) Nichols of New York State. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Nathan Paul Nichols, on April 18, 1978; a sister, Joyce Coon, and a brother, Gordon Nichols. Friends may call at the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, 1911 S Main St, Goshen, Ind...A memorial service for Mr Nichols will be held, at 11:30 am Wednesday, June 22, at the Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church, with his brother-in-law, Dr Jay Kesler, Upland, Ind, and his former pastors, Rev Harold Knight of Beulah Missionary Church and Rev Marvin Engbrecht of Nappanee Missionary Church officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Spartansburg.
