Criminal. Member of the Ku Klux Klan, he was one of the men that planted a bomb in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham Alabama. The Sept. 15, 1963, explosion killed Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley, all 14, and Denise McNair, 11. He was convicted in 1977 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in an Alabama prison in 1985 at age 81.
