Eleanor was born to Mennonite Missionary parents in India.

She was a registered nurse. Far ahead of her time, she championed nursing practices, including natural childbirth, in the 1950's and '60's, and worked at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton.

On June 12, 1953, she married Marvin Ewert. They had two sons.

She passed away on April 1, 1980, from complications related to Huntington's Chorea, a neurological disorder passed on through family lines, in this case, her mother's. Her brother Harold also died of Huntington's. It is the disease that took the life of famous folk singer Woody Guthrie
