In 1860, he was a tailor presumably living in Bedford County. He stood 5' 6" tall and had sandy hair and hazel eyes. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in St. Clairsville, Bedford County, August 17, 1862, with Co. E, 138th Pa Inf, at the rank of private and serving as the company cook. On January 18, 1864, illness forced him into the hospital where he spent the last two months of his service. Exact date of discharge unknown, but he left the army on a surgeon's certificate.
