Joseph Cabral is at the Morton Hospital as a result of an accidental shooting about 11 o'clock this morning in the woods back of Liberty Street, East Taunton. According to the story told by Manuel Souza who was with Cabral at the time and who is deeply broken over the sad affair, he and Cabral who were both enjoying vacations went to the woods with a small rifle to practice target shooting. They fired the rifle a few times and then, believing it empty, both were examining it and accidental pulled the trigger. There was a cartridge in the gun, and it went off, the ball striking Cabral in the forehead. Medical aid was immediately summoned and first aid rendered, and Cabral rushed to the Morton Hospital. The course of the bullet was traced to one side of the head, but on the first examination it was believed that Cabral was seriously injured. Both young men bear good reputations Cabral is employed in a Middleboro shoe factory, which at present time is closed, and Souza is employed in the shoe lace department of the Chandler Oil Cloth Company, which is also temporarily shut down. The young men have been close friends.
This afternoon, Souza had come to the police station to tell his story and previous to his coming; Chief Danforth stated that although everything pointed to the affair being entirely accidental, the police would necessarily have to conduct a full investigation. Cabral was brought to the Morton Hospital shortly afternoon and it was said there that his chances for recovery are very poor. He was then in the operating room and the bullet had not been located.

Manuel Sousa Marques was before the district court this morning, charged with manslaughter in causing purely accidental as a precsu [no other text on this line] East Taunton yesterday. He was represented by William A. Bellamy, who stated that they were ready to proceed with the case. Deputy chief Cash who stated to the court however, that while all the indications pointed to the death as being purely accidental, as a precautionary measure, further investigation was advisable and asked for a continuance to Tuesday next. This was granted and bonds were furnished in the sum of $400.
Cabral died Tuesday afternoon about 2:30. With a bullet in his brain, his case was always hopeless. Marques was greatly affected by the death of his companion. They were in the woods at East Taunton, shooting at a target, a piece of paper tacked to a tree. All but one shot had been fired and Marques was handling the weapon when it exploded, the last bullet hitting Cabral in the head. No one else was present at the time. Marques and Cabral have been the best of friends according to neighbors and are related closely.
