Born in Osage Bend or Jefferson City, Cole County, Missouri to the Rev. and Professor and Major Thomas Francis Lockett (served in the CSA in the Civil War) of Prince Edward County, Virginia and Sallie Waller Dixon Lockett of Person County, North Carolina.

She was raised in Missouri and Texas, and at age 19, still at home with her mother and father, was a resident of McLennan County, Texas, where she was probably in school at Baylor University in Waco.

Her father was a professor at Baylor University and a "Minister of the Gospel" in McLennan County, Texas, the 1870 census showing the local post office as Waco, Texas.

On February 19, 1874 in Towash, Hill County, Texas she married Pvt. Francis Watkins Carter, a CSA veteran of the Civil War.

They had several children together:

Corrine "Connie" Carter Scranton 1874-1921
Frances V. "Fannie" Carter Charters 1877-1984
Katherine Dixon "Kate" Carter 1879-1947
Thomas Fontaine Carter 1882-1954
Ruth Ophelia Carter Pierce 1887-1952

Kate is my 3rd cousin, 3 times removed. (Mike Lockett)
