Second of four children born to Luther McLane Carmichael and Lillie M. Stansell.

Paternal grandparents: William Wilson Carmichael b. July 19, 1839 and Susanna Bailey b. October 7, 1839.

Maternal grandparents: Baron DeKalb Stansell b. November 25, 1833 and Caroline "Carrie" Jane Prichard b. March 18, 1837.

Carlton married Clara Cordelia Roberson on September 1, 1937. The couple had three children: Carlton James, Jr., Evelyn Elaine, Ila Fern.

He was a graduate of Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University), Lubbock, Texas and worked for the Soil Conservation Service in New Mexico.

Carlton retired with his wife, Clara, on the Carmichael family ranch southeast of Kenna, New Mexico.
