Edward became a doctor. He began his medical career with the Rockefeller Foundation as Caribbean medical Chief. In 1932he was married to Helen, a member of a prominent Toronto Family. He served in North Africa during the Second World War. When at the Battle of Tobruk he once tended the wounds of a German soldier who proved to the Field Marshal Erwin Von Rommel. Rommel is said to have cited the young Canadian doctor to Flahiff's superiors in London, who awarded him a decoration as a result. After the war he became medical officer of the Canadian Mining Association.
