John Denison Miller, 86, of Niagara Falls, NY, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013. A life-long resident of Niagara Falls, John spent the last 72 years of his life in a house in DeVeaux he helped his father build. After graduating from Niagara Falls High School, John attended St. John's College in Annapolis, MD for a year, at which time he enlisted in the U.S. Army for service during World War II. He served in the Medical Corps in the Pacific Theater of Operations and was stationed at Okinawa at the war's end.
After his discharge, John completed his B.A. degree at the University of Buffalo, and then received an M.A. degree in Economics from Columbia University in New York City. His education prepared him for a long, distinguished career with corporations including Union Carbide, where he was Senior Cost Engineer, and the John W. Danforth Company, where he served as Project Construction Manager. John's work supported major construction projects in Western NY and across the mid-west. He was a past president of the local chapter of the American Association of Cost Engineers, and also served as a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Niagara Falls.
John met the love of his life, Adrienne Wheaton, in 1954. They married six months later, and spent the next 58 years side by side. When they weren't involved with their full calendar of social events, they traveled extensively across the U.S., Canada and Europe, and were always open to sharing new adventures.
An avid sailor for many years, John crewed in numerous races across the Great Lakes. Long-time members of the Youngstown Yacht Club, John and Adrienne remembered fondly the wonderful times and many trips they enjoyed with the sailing crowd.
A confirmed historian and Civil War buff, John spent his later years as a voracious reader, and also visited many Civil War battlefields. Especially proud of his own family's lineage, John never tired of regaling his children and grandchildren with family history stories and anecdotes.
John was predeceased by his parents, Harold Grobb Miller and Ruth Denison Miller; and by his cherished son, Andrew Campbell (Drew) Miller.
In addition to Adrienne, John is survived by his daughter, Ruth Miller, son-in-law, Richard Sherwood and granddaughter, Elizabeth Sherwood of New York City; his son, John Denison Miller II, daughter-in-law, Karen Hansen, grandchildren, Brittany, Emily and John Denison Miller III; and step-grandchildren, Nick and Ben Lappen of Scituate, MA; and daughter-in-law, Christine Cavalier of San Francisco, CA.
John was a kind and generous man to whom his family and friends meant most in life. He was proud to be from Niagara Falls and proud of his accomplishments, but most of all, proud of his family. He will truly be missed.
