Mr. Luther Martin McBee III, 92, formerly of Pine Forest Drive and husband of the late Dorothy Grogan Hagood McBee, died Sunday, February 17, 2008, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenville in 1916, Mr. McBee was a son of the late Luther Martin McBee, Jr. and the late Floride Bonneau Smith McBee. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1933 and was a 1937 graduate from The Citadel with a BS in Civil Engineering. After a few years with the Brandon Corporation, he entered The U.S. Army in 1941 and was assigned to the 15th Army Group Command, where he served as Aide de Camp to General Lyman L. Lemnitzer throughout the Mediterranean Campaign in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. Mr. McBee retired from the Army in 1945 as a Lt. Colonel.
Following World War II, Mr. McBee re-joined Brandon Corporation. In the 1950's he began his real estate career and in 1963 became one of the first designees in South Carolina as a Member of the Appraisal Institute (MAI). For many years, Luke served the Lord by helping to build St. Michael's Parish in Easley and serving as a Vestry member of St. Michael's and Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville.
Luke has well served his community and friends. He was a member of the following clubs and organizations: Poinsett Club (President), The Cotillion Club (President), The Downtown Rotary Club, The St. Andrews Society, The Association of Citadel Men, The Trinity Cemetery Association (Abbeville, SC), and founding member of the Jocassee Club.
Surviving are two sons, Luther M. McBee IV and his wife, Terry, of Wadmalaw Island, S.C., and Albert S. Hagood Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Greenville; a daughter, Starke Hagood Bishop and her husband, Benjamin C. Bishop Jr., of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Floride McBee Barksdale of Jackson, Miss.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his special family friend, Velma Griffin.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Friday in the Markley Chapel at Christ Church Episcopal, with burial to follow in the churchyard. The family will receive friends at the Poinsett Club after the service to celebrate Luke's life.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Church Episcopal, 10 N. Church Street, Greenville, SC 29601 or the Alzheimer's Association , S.C. Chapter, 301 University Ridge, Suite 5000, Greenville, SC 29601.
