Elizabeth and her twin brother, Lane, were born on April 16, 1918 to Dr. W.D. and Lizzie Y. (Green) Black in Pecos, Texas. She graduated from Barstow Texas High School in 1936. She then attended Hillsboro Junior College for one year before transferring to Texas Tech. While at Tech, she was introduced to her future husband, Bill, by her twin brother. She and Bill, of Brady, Texas, married on December 25, 1940 at the First Presbyterian Church in Abilene. They began their married life in Amherst, Texas where Bill was employed by the USDA. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and they were assigned to the Covington Naval Air Station in Tennessee. After WWII, they returned to Pecos, Texas to raise their family.
Bill and Elizabeth owned Home Furniture Company until 1963 where Elizabeth served as the bookkeeper. She then worked for several years as the secretary to Dr. Ed Schmidt. She retired from Pecos ISD in 1979, where she worked for 10 years as the secretary for the Maintenance Department.
As a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pecos for 49 years, Elizabeth was a tireless and faithful volunteer. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and was active in the work of The Women of the Church. After moving to Abilene in 1994, she and Bill joined the First Central Presbyterian Church.
Elizabeth was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She set a sweet, Christian example for everyone who ever knew her. In the face of long years of crippling arthritis, she exhibited quiet strength, courage, dignity and grace. One of her greatest joys was being surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she considered some of her richest blessings. She considered attending Bloys Campmeeting, with her family, in the Davis Mountains, one of her many joys in life. She and Bill enjoyed fly fishing, sightseeing, and vacationing in the mountains of Colorado.
Elizabeth is survived by her devoted husband, Bill. They were blessed to be together in their own home for almost 68 wonderful years. She is also survived by their four children and their spouses: Nancy (Dick) Lemons of Abilene, John (Judy) Bingham of El Paso, Susan (Ed) Foreman of San Angelo, Judi (David) Hutcheson of Wolfforth and special caregiver, Loretta Hall. She is also survived by her 8 grandchildren: Jan (Gary) Hulshouser, Jamie (Brad) Davis, Ami (Kel) Robinson, Monica (Tim) Downing, Jennifer (Kevin) Walker, Tammy (Derek) Brosh, Brian (Shana) Hutcheson and Brad Hutcheson, as well as, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Also surviving her are two sisters-in-law, Helen Wilson and Sybil Barsch, two brothers-in-law, Leland Moore and Sil Gallo plus numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, her adored twin brother, Lane, her older brother DeWitt and her two sisters, Mary Eleanor and Carolyn.
Elizabeth's family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. B.J. Estes, Dr. Noel Chant, Dr. Joseph M. Ferguson, Mickey New, Maria Berry and all the nurses, aides and PT's who so tenderly cared for her during her illness.
The family suggests memorial gifts in Elizabeth's name to be made to: FCPC Choir Fund, 400 Orange, Abilene, Texas 79602, Fist Presbyterian Church of Pecos, Box 296, Pecos, Texas 79772; or to Bloys Campmeeting Association, Box 1335, Ft. Davis, Texas 79734.
