Agnes, became a nurse while living in Toronto, Canada. She was a nurse to the soldiers of the great war. This is where she met her soldier husband Michael McCaw.

They had their first two children while still living in Canada, they were John and Jean

Agnes and Michael decided to migrate to the United States and since Detroit ,Michigan was just over the bridge they landed in the city. They move several times, life was not easy on the young couple, more children being born. And the death angel visiting two of their youngest children. They moved to Highland Park ,Michigan, and ended up having more children and living out most of their life in a three room apartment at 116 LaBelle Ave.

Agnes became the caretaker of small apartment building with it's twelve apartments, she worked from sun up to sun down keeping the place spotless. To earn extra money she would wash sheets and press them on her mangle even teaching her grandson Raymond later on how to help her press

Later on as her children grew up and started on their own lives, them having children and all she took in several of her grandchildren in order to help out while they earned a living. These very grandchildren called her Mom and felt great love towards her.

Mom never spoke above a whisper ,which with all the kids living in there was hard to do but she was a very mild person and never let anything shake her. If one of them hurt themselves she would bind them up and tell them to keep quite. They would do as she said and soon be on the road to recovery.

Though mom was a nurse she also was Christian Science and practiced it in her life. If the children needed medical help she would get it for them. It was almost a ritual that she lined them all up and with a large tablespoon and gave them a dose of Castor Oil, and chuckled to herself as they moaned and groaned and made faces.

She was a one pot meal maker, because she knew it would go farther. Among these were ,split pea soup, white beans, dumplings, stew and on Sundays she made meatloaf to the delight of everyone and never received a complaint.
Every morning they were greeted with a hardy bowl of oatmeal before going off to school. Later on as the older grandchildren left, she started all over with some of her great grandchildren.

On holidays mom would make a whole feast and the whole family would gather together in this three room apartment. she would make homemade mincemeat and pumpkin pies. she enjoyed having her entire family together

Mom became the owner of the apartment building she toiled so hard in and at their twilight years they went to live with their youngest daughter June.

Upon her passing, you could look around and truly say from this little acorn came so many and each felt they were the one she loved best.

Agnes never forgot her Irish Roots.

We are thankful to all that visit with this kind and loving Mom
