Sylvester Shaw was born November 18, 1800 to Joanna and Russell Shaw. In 1821 he married his first wife, Elizabeth Hatfield Shaw. With her, he had 16 children - Elmina, Araminta, Zanetta, Martha, Mertina, Mersilla, Chambers, Sarilda, Amberson, Anderson, Columbus, Rufus, Clement, ova, Edgar and "infant Shaw" who died at birth. In 1851 Elizabeth died and shortly thereafter, Sylvester married Sarah Jane Wire Shaw (my grandmother). Sylvester was 51 and Sarah Jane was 26. With Sarah Jane, Sylvester had about eight more children - India, Landen (my grandfather), Eldridge, Pangburn, Laben, Leander, Cyrus and Silas. Sarah Jane died in 1879. Sylvester married for the third and final time in 1881. He married Mariah Sowers when he was 80 years of age and she was 20 years of age. Sylvester died February 29, 1884 at the age of 83.
