From Jonny Whisenant:

It was passed on to me by several relatives that William and Mattie's faith and Church played a central role in their lives. I have understood that (Willie) was an Elder in Mount Pisgah, and the Clerk of the Session i.e. (keeper of the records) and that Mattie, who lived to be 96 years old, was a member of it for 80 of those years.
My Mother, Wynelle Herring Whisenant , Johhny Herrings oldest daughter, told me several stories about their Faith.
She related to me that:
"When Grandpaw Herring prayed in Church, you knew it was going somewhere", IE being heard.
"One time when the area was experiencing a drought, the men of the Church gathered together to pray. Grandpaw Herring took his raincoat with him and before he got home again he had to put it on due to rain."
"That it was common to hear him "whoop" or "holler" like saying "Amen " out loud during a their worship services."
Not the same as in Pentecostal services but lively and engaged nonetheless.
"One of the favorite Church Social gatherings were "All day singings", all the church families would gather, bring food, socialize, sing and the kids would play."
She also related to me that, Willie kept the record book for Mt. Pisgah, and that when their house burned down they went looking for it. When they found it in the bottom of a drawer it had burned but was open to Isaiah 40:8 which says,

"The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever."

And when they reached down to pick it up it crumbled to pieces in their hands.
