When he was about six years old, he was hit by a school bus. He was seriously injured. He had a plate put in his head, which at that time was a very unusual thing.
He also had severe asthma. In 1947, on doctors orders he went to AZ to see if the dry desert air would help his asthma. He was so much better his wife, Geraldine and their son, Richard soon joined him there. He worked as a carpenter. As his health deteriorated he took a job driving for a doctor with sight problems. He remained in AZ until he passed away in 1966.
