Due to the death of the parents the family was left penniless. After the civil war ended the kids headed west and spread out over Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska. It appears that John and Mary Ann (Hobbs) Roseberry took care of the younger kids until they could take care of themselves.

For most of this time, from when they moved to MO, the two youngest brothers, William H. and Thomas J., lived with them. In 1900, John and Mary were still living in Nodaway Twp. in Nodaway Co. with her brother James. In 1910 Mary Ann, a widow, was living with her brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Sarah, in Union Twp., Worth Co., MO.
