In WWII in the Pacific he served on the heroic Destroyer Escort USS Conklin DE 439m or which he was a member of the original crew, known as a "Plank Member" The USS Conklin DE 439 sank 2 enemy submarines. In a huge typhoon June 1945, the small ship was rolled on its side by an enormous wave. All power and lights were lost . By a miracle the ship righted, but the men worked in dire circumstances to get the power started to save their lives.
