US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Delbert John Ackerson enlisted in the Marine Corps 17 March, 1944 from Waterloo, Iowa. Completed recruit training in the 5th Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. Assigned to the 66th Replacement Battalion, Infantry Training Regiment, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. Trained and designated an Automatic Rifleman (MOS 476) and assigned to the 6th Replacement Draft. 22 July, 1944 embarked USS Barnstable (APA-93) at San Diego for movement overseas.

30 July, 1944 arrived at Pearl Harbor and assigned to HQ Company, Replacement Battalion, Transient Center, MCB Camp Catlin, Oahu. During August, 1944 embarked Naval Tranport (APA). Assigned as an Automatic Rifleman (MOS 746) in A Company, 1st Battalion, 21st Marines, 3rd Marines Division on Guam. Participated in patrolling against Japanese thru 3 November, 1944. Promoted to Private First Class.

11 February, 1945 embarked Naval Transport (APA). 17 February, 1945 left the Marianas. 19 February, 1945 off shore reserves during the D-Day landings at Iwo Jima. 21 February, 1945 landed Yellow Beach Iwo Jima and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 22 February, 1945.

Next of Kin: Sister, Mrs Edna G Hane, 808 Randolph Street, Waterloo, Iowa. Parents, Mr George E and Mrs Anna G Ackerson, Waterloo, Iowa.

Initially buried in the 3rd Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima.

1948 Returned to the US for permanent burial in Waterloo, Iowa.
