An Olympic gold medallist, Member of Parliament and Irish nationalist. He travelled as a spectator to the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, 1896 and was persuaded to play in the tennis just before the competition began. He ended up winning the singles and doubles (with a German partner). He was a qualified solicitor but instead focused on politics, and served as the Member for South Kerry in the House of Commons. He was a strong advocate for the Irish language and independence. (bio by Tim Reynolds)
