Lieutenant George Morey

George Judson Morey was born 05 Jun 1915 in West New York, New Jersey; son of Judson Horace Morey and Mildred Caroline Berthold.

He died 02 Mar 2013, in Pompano Beach, Florida at the age of 97 years.

George was inducted into the U.S. Army on 17 Mar 1940, at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He received his basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. George graduated from Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia on 06 Jul 1942 with the rank of Second Lieutenant.

After graduation, George was ordered to Camp Adair, Oregon to cadre for the 96th Infantry Division at Camp Shelby, Miss. He was assigned as the Regimental Adjutant with the rank of Captain. George was awarded the Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster for Valor.

In November of 1944, the Regiment was ordered overseas, landing at Cardiff, Wales, then moved to Crawley, Hampshire, England. The Regiment was sent into battle at the Siegfried line to relieve the 29th Division, Udenbreth, Belgium.

The Regiment continued on to take Leipzig, then on to Trebsen to contact with the Russian Army. On April 26, 1945, George led the patrol to meet Russian General Russakov at Reisa, on the Ekbe River.

The 69th Division was one of the first sent home after VE and VJ Days. George left France on September 6, 1945, and arrived back home in Dumont, New Jersey in time for his parents' wedding anniversary on September 17, 1945.

George was transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves in July of 1947. He was called to Washington, DC to become the Administrative Assistant of the National Guard Association, under General Ellard A. Walsh. He later joined the staff of the DC National Guard as acting Adjutant General under General William Abendroth, until his resignation with the rank of Major in 1951.

George remained in Washington, DC until moving to south Florida in 1973. He resided in Hollywood and worked as an Interior Designer with several local furniture companies. While in Hollywood, George attended Nativity Catholic Church. He later moved to Pompano Beach and attended Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his long time companion, Astrid as well as his three canine companions, Andre I, Andre II and Knight.

He is survived by his loving friend, Maria Wagner and his niece, Diane LoPresti.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Fred Hunter's Hollywood Memorial Gardens Home. The Rev. Fr. Michael Conway will officiate. Interment will follow at Hollywood Memorial Gardens.
