Farmer Dies When Struck by Motorcar
U. Grant Cross, Town of Nekimi Man, Instantly Killed When Hit by Car Driven by Arthur Strey, Route 1, Van Dyne, on Highway 26

Struck by an automobile while he was walking on Highway 26 a half mile from his home, about five miles south of Oshkosh Monday evening, U. Grant Cross, about 61, town of Nekimi farmer, was instantly killed.

According to a sheriff's department report Cross died of a skull fracture as a result of being struck by the automobile driven by Arthur Strey, Route 1, Van Dyne. Strey was driving to his home in the town of Nekimi from Oshkosh.

Cross filled silo yesterday at the Robert Brennand farm, ate supper there last night and afterward started to walk home. He was walking southwest on the left side of th highway.

Sheriff's officers said Strey, headed south in a light coupe, passed another car, striking Cross, who was thrown about 10 feet to the left of the concrete.

Unaware of Accident
Strey did not know at first he had struck anyone, he told Undersheriff Paul Neubauer and Clarence Smith, county motorcycle officer, but stopped almost immediately to ask the driver of the car he had passed whether or not there had been an accident. The accident occurred about 6:10 o'clock.
Cross was struck by the left front fender of Strey's machine. Officials did not obtain the name of the driver whom Strey passed.

Officers Smith and Neubauer were called to the scene of the accident. They communicated with Coroner Martin A. Potratz of Neenah and Dist. Atty. R. C. Laus. There will be inquest, the coroner and district attorney announced after making an investigation.

U. Grant Cross was born in the town of Poygan, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Philetus Cross. He came to Oshkosh about 30 years ago, laboring in various woodworking plants in the city. He lived in Oshkosh about 25 years.
About five years ago he moved to the town of Nekimi.

Family Survives
Survivors are the widow, three sons and a daughter, Norman Cross of the town of Nekimi, Thomas Cross of Winnebago, Mrs. Ernest Guenther of Oshkosh, and George Cross of the town of Nekimi.
