Thomas Keith Estes, Sr.

Faith: Tom's Christian faith was central to his life and his understanding of the world.
He commented that he had not had a moment of conversion, but he simply had always felt the presence of God. He believed in Povidence; that God at several times had intervened in his life to bless him. Tom was a member of the Anthony Methodist Church from the time he moved to Anthony in the mid 1950's and was where he got married and raised his children and later the La Mesa Methodist Church. Tom was an active member at both, serving as lay minister, treasurer and board member.

Service: Tom originally intended to enlist in the Navy at the age of 17, having obtained his father's permission. His mother protested and his father's death caused him to delay that plan as he went to work to help support his mother and his younger siblings working in various smelters. He eventually got his wish and served his country at the end of WWII in the US Navy repairing and modifying ship's guns in San Diego from 1944-1946. As a member of the Naval Reserve he was called back to service in Korea. He served as a Gunner's Mate 3rd Class, patrolling the waters off the coast of North Korea and shelling coastal targets. He served on the destroyers USS Hubbard and USS Hamner from 1950-1952 when he was released from active duty due to a family emergency. He proudly served his country.

Education: Tom finished his two year degree in education in 1948 after having, himself, dropped out of high school. He came to the Gadsden District in 1956 as an elementary school teacher and after earning a Master in Education from WNMU he went on to become principal of Sunland Park Elementary, Anthony Elementary and La Mesa Elementary.
"Mr. Estes, Principal" was not his job title, it was his identity; it continued to be until his death. He commented only weeks before his passing that he had always been immensely proud to be part of the district and had a sense that they had accomplished great things.

Family: Tom married Donna Thatcher in June, 1957 and enjoyed 30 wonderful years, until her death in 1988. With four children and (for most years) one teacher's salary, he managed to provide his family with all they needed and more. His examples of kindness, generosity, honesty, sacrifice, integrity and honor are an inspiration to them. Tom was blessed to have found someone later in life whom he loved deeply and who returned that love and affection. He reveled in their travels, dancing, RVing and the simple joys of their time spent together. His last years of declining health were eased and brightened by Youngja Holloway, who not only took care of him, but greatly cared about him.
