My great-grandfather, James, was one of six children born to Andrew Jackson Smith and Mary Ellen Knowles. He was raised in northern Indiana, and married Ida Flora Loughridge on November 28, 1900. He and Ida settled on a farm in Newton County, Indiana, and began their family. After several years, they moved to Tonkawa, Oklahoma, in the hopes that the dry air and weather in that area would help the health of one of their sons. The family moved back to Indiana after several years, and then back to Tonkawa for good.
James was survived by his wife Ida; sister Maggie Danford; sons William, Emory and Orlin; daughters Margaret and Florence LaVera; and several grandchildren. Daughters Alice and Velma, an infant son, and grandson Billy preceded him in death.
