Aubrey Overton Smith was born on June 5, 1893, in Beckley, Raleigh County, W.Va., a son of Jackson Smith and Minnie Hurt Smith.

He married Nell Elizabeth Robertson (1890-1979), daughter of David Robertson and Elizabeth Carper Robinson, in 1917 in Raleigh County, W.Va. Aubrey and Nell had a daughter, Elizabeth May Smith, in 1919.

He attended West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, W.Va.

Mr. Smith held positions in government including Beckley city recorder and chief clerk of the Raleigh County Draft Board. He was a World War I veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a noted local historian. The product of Mr. Smith's work, in collaboration with Judge Winton A. Riffe, is contained in the Smith-Riffe Collection, W.Va. Dept. of Culture and History. (Index: http://www.wvculture.org/history////ms80-9.html )

Mr. Smith died on May 2, 1978. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
