Alma L. Oswald, 69, a resident of Santa Cruz since 1943, died Friday in Santa Cruz.

A native of Iowa, she moved to California with her family when she was 5 years old. She was known for her rare bird hatchery at her home in Live Oak, where during the past 10 years she raised and sold thousands of birds and their eggs. On one occasion, she supplied 400 quail eggs for a governor's reception at UCSC.

She was a member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Altar Society of Star of the Sea, and the Young Ladies Institute.

A rosary will be recited tonight at 8 at White's chapel, 138 Walnut Ave.

Services will begin at White's chapel Tuesday at 9 : 15 a m. and from there go to Star of the Sea church where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated commencing at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Cross Mausoleum.

Survivors include her husband, Philip "Bud" Oswald of Santa Cruz; a son, Richard Oswald of Santa Cruz; four sisters, Emma Smith of Minnesota, Rose Eyraud of San Gabriel, Mamie Costello of Bellflower and Lillian Wheeler of Ceres; three brothers, William Aesterberg [sic] of Visalia, and George Aesterberg [sic] and Albert Aesterberg [sic], both of Porterville, and one grandaughter.
