Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Myrtle Ahlstrom passed away in Holladay UT On June 20 2013, at the age of 91.
She was born to Thomas Frederick Murley and Lilly Myrtle Crowley Murley on July 31, 1921 in Bolivar Tennessee. She was the fifth of nine children, six brothers John, Thomas, Joseph, Buford, Buster and Marvin, and two sisters Mattie and Annie. She was raised on a farm just outside Bolivar Tennessee. In high school she was a star on the girls basketball team. Her team won the West Tennessee Championship, largely due to her playing injured to rally the team in the final game. Her coach, even years later, would ask her about her knee and say he felt guilty for letting her play. She loved watching the game for the rest of her life. During World War II she went to San Diego California to work for Consolidated Aircraft building B-24 bombers. There she met the love of her life Harry C. Ahlstrom. They were married on September 20, 1942 in Yuma Arizona, and were later sealed the Salt Lake Temple. While in San Diego their first child, Ron, was born. Harry enlisted in the Army and for the remaining war years Myrtle returned to the family farm with Ron. After the war they moved to Cedar City Utah, Harry's former home, where their daughter, Linda, was born. They then moved to Salt Lake City for a job opportunity and settled in Holladay where their third child, Bruce was born. She was a wonderful mother and blessed the lives of her children with the politeness and charm of her southern background. Myrtle was a member of the LDS Church and held many callings during her lifetime. She liked to be outdoors and loved to fish and camp. She was an excellent cook, especially her southern fried chicken, homemade rolls, and magnificent pies.
She is survived by her husband Harry, children Ron (Kristin) Ahlstrom, Linda (Scott) Rich and Bruce (Keri) Ahlstrom. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren who she enjoyed immensely and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her brothers and sisters and one grandson, Jared Ahlstrom. The family would like to thank all of the care givers from Home Instead as well as the hospice nurses who took such loving care of mother and continue to care for dad.
Graveside memorial services will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Drive, at 12 noon Wednesday June 26. A viewing will be held Tuesday June 25th At Wasatch Lawn Mortuary from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., an again on Wednesday June 26 at 11:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
