Russell "Bups" Ahner Jr., 60, of 623 Fairyland Road, Lehighton, a former Franklin Township supervisor and fire chief, died Wednesday in Pottstown Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Daisy (Ashworth) Ahner. They observed their 20th wedding anniversary in August.
Ahner was a heavy equipment operator for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission for 20 years.
He also was a stock car driver at the Mahoning Valley Speedway and the former Nazareth Speedway.
Born in North Weissport, he was a son of the late Russell Sr. and Sallie (Green) Ahner.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Franklin Township. A former president of the Franklin Township Fire Co., he was a founder and captain of the Franklin Township Old Timers Benefit Softball Team, and was active in the township's Little League program. He played Santa Claus for area convalescent homes and sick children during the holidays.
Survivors: Wife; son, Russell C.; daughter, Karen Tracy, and sisters, Arlene, wife of Charles Ahner, Joan, wife of Karl Sheckler, and Mrs. Jane Smith, all of Lehighton; brothers, Mark of Jim Thorpe and Willard of Lehighton; stepdaughters, Maryln, wife of Michael Szakacs, Mrs. Debra Turner and Mrs. Lisa Hauser, and stepsons, Jeffrey and Trevor Shellhammer, all of Lehighton; a granddaughter Kelly, whom he raised, and 11 other grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter Sandra.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Mayes-Melber Funeral Home, 200 Franklin St., Weissport. Call 7-9 p.m. today.
