Sarah "Sallie" Lee, daughter of Wyatt Lee and his second wife, Dolly Grant, was born in 1807, Dinwiddie County, Virginia. She had three older half siblings, James, Nancy and Elizabeth called Buckey. She was the oldest of the ten children of her parents. Her siblings were John Hartwell, Joseph, Henry C., female infant, Susan, Emily, Clementine, William Y. and Wyatt, Jr. The family were in Clarke County, Georgia before 1816 and settled south of Athens near the township of Watkinsville. On Dec 3, 1821, Sallie and Samuel Gann, Jr. were married in Clarke County. He was the son of Mary Hambrick Gann and her deceased husband, Samuel Gann, Sr. They lived near Sallie's parents on land Samuel had probably inherited from his father. Sallie and Samuel, Jr. were the parents of five children. The children were marred and had families of their own by 1860 when Sallie's mentally challenged half sister, Buckey, was enumerated in their household. She was also listed in their household in the 1870 census and had probably lived with them during the Civil War years. Sarah's father, Wyatt Lee died July 10, of 1870 at over 109 years of age. Sarah was a member of the Mars Hill Baptist Church and her name appears in the old church minutes which have survived and been published for historical record. They reveal many interesting things about the culture and people at that time. Sallie was not one of the church women "excommunicated for drinking tea with Methodist ladies."
