Louis Lee Barner, age 73 of Las Cruces entered into eternal life Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at La Posada, Mesilla Valley Hospice. He was born June 18, 1928 in El Dorado, Kansas and had been an area resident since 1983. Mr. Barner served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserves and retired as a boiler mechanic from Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility. Mr. Barner served as a crossing guard at Jornada Elementary School where he was well known and admired.
Survivors include his wife, Louise M. Barner of the family home; one son, Jeffery B. Barner and wife, Diane of La Crescenta, California; two daughters, W. Lee Smith of Milliken, Colorado and Cindy Trausch and husband Randy of Tucson, Arizona; one brother, Ray Barner of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; one sister, Lois Landis of Mesa, Arizona; two step-sisters, Donna Furlon of Greenville, Massachusetts and Dortha Yost also of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Other survivors include fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Eugene Barner.
At his request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to church of choice or to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana, Las Cruces, NM 88005.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels and Baca's Mimbres Crematory. 527-2222

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Louis Lee Barner, 73, died July 18 at La Posado, Mesilla Valley Hospice.
He was born June 18, 1928, in El Dorado, Kan. He married Louise Marie Smith on June 14, 1953, in Goshen.
He was a 1947 graduate of Montpelier High School, Montpelier. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He had lived in Goshen for 30 years.
He worked as an auto mechanic for George Miller's Garage. Both he and his wife retired from Penn's (Johnson Controls) in 1983. They moved to Las Cruces in August 1983, where he worked as a boiler mechanic at Southern New Mexico Correctional facility. Prior to his illness, he served as a school crossing guard for Jorndo Elementary School.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Wilma Lee Smith, Millken, Colo., and Cindy (Mrs. Randy) Trausch, Tucson, Ariz.; a son, Dr. Jeffrey Barner, La Crescenta, Calif.; a sister, Lois Landis, Mesa, Ariz.; a brother, Ray Barner, Fort Wayne; two stepsisters, Donna Furlon, Greenville, Mass., and Dortha Yost, Fort Wayne; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
