Ruby was the third of seven children of Archie Duncan "A.D." Gatlin (1871-1914) and Frances Elizabeth "Sissie" White Gatlin (1874-1956).
On July 18, 1922, Ruby married Diemer Barnett and they where married for almost seventy years, until his death in January 1992. They had no children and were lifelong members of Cash Point Baptist Church (Tennessee).
