Mrs. Mertie (Scheidler) Bates, 94, of 111 West Bidwell Street, Battle Creek, died Tuesday at her home after a three-month illness. Mrs. Bates was born in Ovid Township, Branch County, and lived in the Coldwater area until coming to Battle Creek in 1956. She had been a teacher in Branch County schools and also had been a dressmaker and a practical nurse. She retired in 1956. Mrs. Bates was a member of Lockwood Church. She was the widow of Royal E. Bates. Mrs. Bates is survived by a daughter, Miss Royal M. Bates, of 111 West Bidwell Street. Friends may call at Putnam Funeral Home, Coldwater, where services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
