Joseph suffered from lung cancer that metastasized to his brain for the final year of his life. At the time of his death at Mount Rose Hospital, he was 65 years, 4 months and 3 days old.
He was survived by his wife, Esther; 4 daughters; 4 grandsons and 2 granddaughters.
Masonic services took place at 8 p.m. on 14 Mar 1971 at Hutchens Mortuary on Graham Road in Florissant, St. Louis County, Missouri. Funeral services were conducted there at 10:30 a.m. the following morning.
