AJ Alexander. Age 86, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 22, 2013. A.J. was born on February 10, 1927 in Dale Texas, to Alfred and Lenna Alexander. They moved from Texas to Cottage Grove in 1941 before finally settling down in Sutherlin/Oakland area in 1944. In May of 1945, at the age of 18, A.J. joined the United States Army. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946. He met his true love, Mary Lou Hyatt while she was working as a nurse at Mercy Hospital. They fell in love and married April 25, 1953 in Washington. They settled in the Sutherlin/Oakland area to raise their family. A.J. worked as a log truck driver for years and a mill worker until he retired. He joined the fraternal order of Eagles #3508 in Sutherlin for nearly 30 years during some of that time acting as president. A. J. loved gardening, fishing, and spending time driving in the mountains. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

A.J. is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Lou of Sutherlin; and their children: Eldon Alexander of Sutherlin; Marvin and his wife Marilyn of Roseburg; Lorraine Marcus of Sutherlin;Leona and her husband Garett Denny of Sutherlin; and Leon Alexander of Sutherlin. He is also survived by Duane and Myrtle Alexander of Eugene; and Steve Alexander of Tacoma, Washington; Royce and Kitty of Winston; Orval and Maryanne of Arizona; along with 23 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Cecil; sister, Dura; and his son, Eugene (Gene). A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 1, 2013 at The Father House, corner of E. 2nd and Umatilla in Sutherlin at 11 a.m.
