S/o Absolom Garrett and Sarah "Sallie" C.(?) Benjamin m. Charlotte Ferguson, 7 April 1858 in Franklin Co., Va. Ben enlisted as Orderly Sgt., Co. "D", 2nd Virginia Cavalry known as "the Franklin Rangers", under the command of Capt. G. W. B. Hale. The 1870 Federal Census of ranklin County shows Benjamin as being head of household with children: [1]Leonidas , age 14; [2]Oswald, age 10; [3]Luke, age 3; and [4]John, age 1. In 1872 Ben became a member of the Rocky Mount Masonic Lodge. In 1880 Leonidas was no longer living at home but there was one more child, Amasa B., age 7. Amasa would marry Annie Leitch Duncan on 11 September 1895 and was a commissioner of revenue in Franklin County as well as Mayor. Ben's parents were also living in the home. Ben's occupation is listed as a merchant and by 1879 had 404 acres of land.
