Joyce Wielenga, 87, of Orange City passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at Sanford University of South Dakota Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Keith Krebs will officiate. Interment will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation with will be after 4 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Joyce Elanor was born on March 2, 1926, in Orange City, the daughter of Mitchell J. and Alice Johanna (De Wild) Van Wyk. Mr. Van Wyk was the Sioux County auditor for 50 years. She was raised in Orange City, where she graduated from Northwestern College. She then was a school teacher in Sioux County.
On June 24, 1947, she married Raymond Alvin Wielenga in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where she was a homemaker. From 1960 to 1982, she also assisted "Ray" in the operation of the American Legion Bowling Alley and Cafe in Orange City.
He passed away on Aug. 18, 1982, in Orange City.
Mrs. Wielenga was a member of American Reformed Church. She enjoyed music and had compassion for animals. She was very interested in family and had special relationships with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Linda and Tom Coyle of Overland Park, Kan.; three grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Kate Vande Brake and Mark and Jamie Vande Brake, all of Olathe, Kan., and Robin and John Wheeler of Orange City; six great-grandchildren, Harrison, Charles, Jacob, and Alex Vande Brake, and Haley and Tyler Wheeler; three sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Arlene Oolman and Wilmar and Beverly Wielenga, all of Orange City, and Sylvia Wielenga, of Centennial, Colo.; and a special friend and companion, Edwin Mitchell of Alton, Iowa.
