Ted's mother was Mary Louise Margart Lewitt. He was adopted my Mary's husband Russell A. Smith. His birth certificate states that his father's name is Theodore Brown, age 22 (in Aug 1903), Birthplace: New Jersey, Occupation: Navy. Ted's Social Security application (filled out in his own hand) lists Caine Herbert Brown as his Father and Russell A. Smith as his Stepfather. The family has been unsuccessful in locating Mr. Brown (Ted's birth father).

Ted and Mabel were married on 17 Aug 1929 in Goshen, Elkhart, Indiana. They had 8 children.

Obituary - Theodore H. Smith Sr., 74, 61935 C.R. 37, east of Goshen, died at 8:13 a.m. today at Goshen General Hospital where he was a patient two days. He was ill six months.
A native of Chicago, Mr. Smith was born Aug. 17, 1903, a son of Russell A. and Mary M. (Lewitt) Smith. He lived most of his life in the Goshen area working as an ice cream maker for 37 years at the Goshen Ice Cream Company. He then worked for the Hawthorne-Melody Co., retiring in 1966. Mr. Smith was an active bowler for many years and was a member of the Teamsters union. He married Mabel Cassel Aug. 17, 1929.
Surviving are Mrs. Smith; five daughters, Mrs. James (Mary) Cotherman and Mrs. Lee (Louise) Barner, both of Goshen, Mrs. Wayne (Virginia) Wagner, Elkhart, Mrs. Ed (Jean) Slater, Summerville, S.C., and Mrs. David (Ellie) Fisher, Battle Ground; three sons, Theodore Smith Jr. and James L. Smith, both of Goshen and M-Sgt. Joseph Smith, Edwards Air Force Base, Edwards, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; and a half-sister, Mrs. Ray (Marjorie) Barner, Fort Wayne. A sister, Donna McClish, died in 1957.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. W. Thomas Lee, pastor of the Church of God, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
