Joseph H. Mumma, 86, was Elizabethtown chief
ELIZABETHTOWN Joseph H. Mumma, 86, a former Elizabethtown chief of police, died yesterday at the Masonic Health Care Center.
He graduated in 1927 from the State Police Academy, Hershey, then worked until 1950 as a special officer for the Lehigh Valley Railroad and from 1950-70 as a patrolman and later chief of the Elizabethtown Borough Police Department. He was a member of Elizabethtown Fire Police; Lancaster County Law Enforcement Officers; Red Rose Lodge 16, Fraternal Order of Police; and Pennsylvania Fire Police Association, Palmyra.
He was a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ; Kingston F&AM Lodge 395; Bloomsburg Consistory; Zembo Temple, Harrisburg; Lancaster County Shrine Club; High Twelve Club 629; Middletown Elks Lodge 494; Loyal Order of Moose 596; Conewago American Legion Post 329; Fred F. Barley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5667; Friendship Fire and Hose Company No. 1; and the Conewago Rod and Gun Club. He was a charter member of the Harrisburg DeMolay Chapter.
He was the widower of Ruth Mace Mumma. Surviving are three daughters, a sister, 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the John S. Sell Memorial Chapel, Masonic Home. Burial will be in Mount Tunnel Cemetery.
Viewing will be at the chapel from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund of his church, 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown 17022, or to any charity.
