Ralph DeHaven Jr.Succumbs to Shot Wound Monday Afternoon

Funeral Wednesday
Ralph Wm. DeHaven, farmer living west of LeRoy, died Monday afternoon at the Veterans Hospital at Kansas City as the result of a gunshot wound received the evening before at his home.

Mrs. DeHaven reported to Sheriffs Delbert Helmer and Glenn Dressler that her husband was showing one of the girls how to handle a pistol when it discharged, the bullet striking him on the right side of the head above the ear.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon from the Christina church in LeRoy , conducted by the pastor, Rev. Jud Hamilton. Mrs. Elaine Rohr and Mrs. Lois Lankton sang "In the Garden" and "It Is No Secret." Mrs. Joyce brink was the accompanist.
Casket bearers were George Hegwald, Roscoe Rodgers, Bill Yoho, Ted Sutherland, S.Ray Smith and George Murphy. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery in Topeka. Arrangements were by Mattingly Funeral Home.

Ralph William DeHaven, jr., was born in Abilene, Kans., on December 3, 1922 to Wilma and Ralph DeHaven. He departed this life on March 14, 1966 in Kansas City, Mo.

In July of 1942, he entered the United States Navy serving his country during World War II, and was honorably discharged from the service in October, 1945.

On August 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Cauldwell. To this union were born two children, Wanda Lee on April 16, 1949 and Vicky Kay on November 22, 1951.

As a young boy, he joined the Christian Church in Ponca City, Okla., and later transferred his membership to the First Christian Church of LeRoy.
For 16 years he lived in the rural community of LeRoy, engaged in the farming occupation.

Surviving are his wife and two daughters of the home and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph DeHaven, sr., of 3730 Sena Drive, Topeka, Kansas.
