Peter DeWitt Schenderline Sr., 70, of Lodge Grass, passed away at his home June 23, 2013.

Dewey, as he was affectionately known, was born Aug. 9, 1942, in Crow Agency, a son of Eunice Peters and Joe Thomas. He was raised in the Lodge Grass area. He attended Lodge Grass High school, where he excelled in basketball, football and track, graduating in 1961. He later attended heavy equipment school, receiving a crane operators' certificate. He worked at the Sarpy Creek Mine and on numerous construction sites as a heavy equipment operator. He was a strong union member.

He married Mary Ann Simpson and was later divorced. He married Geraldine Big Day on Aug. 9, 2002, in Hardin. The couple made their home in Lodge Grass. He was a member of the Zion II Church, Piegan Clan and was a child of the Greasy Mouth. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, working with wood and beading.

His parents, a stepdaughter Esther Takes Horse, sisters, Josie White Bear and Janet Stevens, brothers Eddie, Ted, Woody and Donnie Schenderline and his adopted mother Jennie Bad Horse-Covers Up preceded Dewey in death.

Survivors include his wife Geraldine; daughters Shelley (Jack) Covers Up and Faye Ann (Robert) Sparling; sons Shane (Darwina) and Pete Schenderline Jr.; a grand daughter whom he raised as his own, Zakiah; his step sons Pius (Mignon), Leroy (Bethyana) and John Takes Horse; his sister, Virginia Pease; his adopted sons Marvin Stops, Vern Moore and Tony Pisano; his adopted brothers Kenneth Toinetta, Henry Pretty On Top, Butch and Vernon Whiteman; 17 grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; as well as his extended family including the Schenderline, Pease, Redfield, Peters, Chandler, Bright Wings, Stevens, White Bear, Singer, Wallace and Bird Far Away families. Our family is large, if we have missed you, please accept our apology.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, in the Crow Agency Multi-Purpose Building. Interment will follow in the Lodge Grass Cemetery.
