Dr. Lemoyne built the first Crematorium in the
United States in 1876. He did this because his theory was that decaying bodies were seeping into the ground water, thus causing disease & sickness to the living. He was the third person to be cremated in the crematory that he built.
There were 42 cremations here from 1876 to 1900.

Location: Less than one mile from the Washington County Courthouse, follow South main street up the steep hill,
it is oppisite the Presbyterian Health Center, on the left.
