In early life he learned the trade of a carpenter, like his father and his grandmother's brothers (John Lewis and Philip Nitterhouse), and engaged in that business for many years. For some years he was employed in the woodworking department of the Wolf Company, but was compelled to retire on account of ill health. He was a member of Zion's Reformed Church.
He married Emma Ludwig in 1876. John and Emma were the parents of 11 children: Mary
(Mrs. Francis Pickel), George, Charles, Helen (Mrs Harry Tolbert), Carrie (Mrs, John Teesdale), Ruth (Mrs. Harry Raffensberger), Margaret (Mrs. Paul C Eckard), Herbert, Emma (Mrs. John H Rhoades), Pauline (Mrs. Dick Stake) and Edna (Mrs. Edward Guest). His wife and children survived him. He was also survived by one sister, Mrs. John Rossman and three brothers; Barnett L., ex- chief of police, Charles E. of town, and William H. of Illinois.
(Some info taken from his obituary, published on April 7, 1908 in "Public Opinion", newspaper of Chambersburg. Additional info is from my research of the Nitterhouse family)
